Bridie

Bridie

Approximate age:

5 years
Date arrived at Sanctuary: 9 August 2023

Where from:

Abandoned near the shelter

Story:

In August 2023, we took in a weak, confused dog that had been dumped close to the Sanctuary, probably because she got sick and the owner wouldn't or couldn't care for her.  We called her Bridie.

We know all the dogs in the area, so this was another case of an animal being abandoned rather than being cared for properly. She was very weak, and in very poor condition with wounds all over her body. She has a permanent twitch which is a sign of previously having survived distemper.

We kept her under observation, and began feeding her up and she was very trusting, and responded to humans positively, so it's sad to think that a family that she depended on has let her down so terribly.  She's been with us for a while now and has integrated nicely into the sanctuary.

March 2025

Where from:

Abandoned outside the shelter

Story:

In March 2025 Staff arrived to work in the morning and found a large friendly, Rottweiler tied to a fence just near the entrance.    It was so sad because not only had he been abandoned but his owners had a left a small backpack with is belongings and a letter stating that he seemed to be ill but his owners could not afford treatment.

After investigation it turned out that Hercules had an ear infection and also a congenital deformity which meant his back legs were not quite straight.  We tried to contact the owners and offer free treatment if they would take him back but we weren't successful.   Hercules is very friendly with people but doesn't do so well with other dogs even after spending some time with special training.  He is a lovely boy and we really hope we can find him a good home but until then DAS will look after him.

Buster

Buster

Approximate age:

5 years
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

March 2022

Where from:

Reported neglected and tied up

Story:

In March 2022 we got a report about an abandoned dog, left tied outside on a rusty chain, with no ability to lie down comfortably, with no food or water. That dog was Buster and we went to check on him and decided we just couldn't leave him there.

Buster initially had a difficult time integrating into the Sanctuary and was quite aggressive with the staff and other dogs, which is understandable given how he had been treated previously.   But with patience and time he has now settled and lives at the New Sanctuary where he has a lot more space which suits him much better.  He loves to go out on walks and has calmed down significantly since he first arrived, we would love someone to sponsor him and follow his progress.

Onyx

Approximate age:

1 and a half years
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

July 2024

Where from:

Mother Odette and siblings were dumped near the shelter

Story:

Onyx and his mother Odette and 3 siblings were brought to DAS by their owner who planned to surrender them.  Sadly, the sanctuary was unable to take any more rescues and anyway, DAS can not accept owner surrenders otherwise we would be inundated. So the owners just went behind the sanctuary and tied Odette to a tree were she and her puppies were later found by staff.

Onyx's siblings were both adopted but he has remained at the sanctuary with his Mum.  He is the liveliest of young dogs and loves nothing better than to tussle with his playmates all day, except if his hoomans are around when he just loves to play with them too!

Wren

Wren

Wren

Approximate age:

1 year
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

November 2024

Where from:

Dumped by the roadside

Story:

One of 4 pups dumped tied in a sack, Wren and her siblings (Wally, Wave and Whit) were lucky to be found by a member of staff passing by. Wally the only male in the litter was quickly adopted but the three girls have remained with us. They are all a delight and have their own little personalities.

Wren is a little angel and just likes to be part of anything that is going on when the young dogs play and have rough and tumble but she keeps her distance a little bit getting closer as as her confidence starts to grow,
