Sadie

Sadie

We had to make the very hard decision to put a new rescue to sleep. We called her Sadie so at least she had a name.
Doc Gama said she was hit by a car around 3 days ago and her injuries were too severe to save her.
Her jaw was completely fractured and also dislocated. She had a ruptured intestine, damaged liver and Sepsis had set in.

Treatment would have consisted of two surgeries within a couple of days of each other and would have to have been done immediately if there was any chance at saving her jaw. But she was not in a condition to undergo surgery safely and there was no guarantee her jaw would completely heal.
So we made the decision to end her suffering with dignity and love.  Rina and Rudylyn were with her to the end.  It's heartbreaking to think of her suffering and unable to eat for the last few days.
Please brake when you see dogs at the side of the road. They have as much right to be there as you do.
Rest in peace Sadie.

Dylan

Dylan

On 28 July 2022, long-time stray feeders Jammy and Fe asked if we could take in one of the street dogs they had been looking after, following an incident that could have been a hit-and-run as the poor boy could barely stand up.  They called him Dylan, and through the generosity of many small donations, we took him.

Dylan

Dylan's blood tests were ok - he didn't have the usual blood profile of a street dog which is a testament to the care that Jammy and Fe give to the street dogs in their area. He had a high fever and was very disoriented - there are no signs of any bones broken but he had bloodshot eyes.  We let him settle at the Sanctuary for night, but his fever got worse.  The following morning we took him to Animal Wellness for head xrays, which showed inflammation of his thoracic and lumbar vertebrate and also the electrical signals to his eyes were blocked.
We left him at Animal Wellness for monitoring and to try to bring his temperature down.

Sadly, he went into respiratory distress on Saturday morning and despite the best efforts by the clinic staff, he stopped breathing and couldn't be revived.
There is such a lot of loss this week but at least he didn't die alone on the street. So sorry Dylan, we tried our best.

Esme

Esme

We have some really sad news to report - Esme passed away in the early morning of Friday 29 July 2022.  She had one chemo session and seemed ok for a few days after that but then she went downhill rapidly. Her red blood cell count dropped rapidly and we suspected leptospirosis as she started to turn yellow.
We booked her into Animal Wellness for further tests but she passed away surrounded by the night staff who stay with critical cases all night monitoring their vital signs.

She stopped breathing and despite oxygen administration and resuscitation attempts, she passed away.  Thank you to everyone who donated for her care, sent her well-wishes and prayed for her.
You can check out her full story on her profile page

Tyler

Tyler

On 20 July 2022, some DAS supporters bought in 4 tiny new-born puppies whose mother had died during shortly after delivering them.  The mother had hidden them well, and it took days to find them, by which time they were in a very poor state of health, with lots of maggots and almost no strength left.

Just one survived the first day, and we called her Tyler.  She had round the clock attention, and looked to be getting stronger, but but sadly we couldn't save him and he passed away on 25 July 2022.  She stopped eating and developed a discoloration of her skin under her hind legs. She passed away around 4pm with Rina holding her.

Doc Pierre believes it was sepsis, an overwhelming of her system by infection. Young puppies who are without mothers milk do not have developed immune systems to fight off bacteria and other pathogens. She was just too young to survive.
Run free little Tyler and know that you were very much loved in the short time you were with us.

Angelo

Angelo

On 26 June 2022, we rescued a hit-and-run dog that had crawled off into a sewer.  Super hero vet assistant Angel crawled in and bought him out, so we called the dog Angelo.

One of the hardest decisions we have to make is the decision to put a dog to sleep.
We rescue the most tragic cases, many who at the time, seem like there is no hope. But we always hope. If an outcome is uncertain, we always try and do our best to help a dog, not just survive, but thrive.

But sometimes there is no hope. Poor Angelo had a severed spine, had severe nerve damage, a dislocated femur, and more.  He was in quite severe pain but his last couple of days he was on morphine so he spent his last hours pain free.
He was around 12 to 13 years old.
We only euthanize a dog or cat when there is no hope of regaining a quality of life and this was the case with Angelo.
We sat with him, me, Rudylyn, Rachelle and Pierre, and told him he was a brave boy and that we hoped he had had some love in his life. We stroked him and talked to him as he passed.
We gave him the same service that we give all our dogs and cats that pass and wished him a speedy journey to the other side.
We are so sorry Angelo that you had to suffer as you did.
