Fria Adopted March 2021

Finally! Fria has been adopted into a wonderful home. Olga and Abby are supporters of DAS and Have followed Frias story from the beginning.  They couldn't bear to see Fria not get a home so they adopted her.

She has a HUGE garden to play in and four new siblings who were excited to meet her.  Here she is leaving the Sanctuary. She actually looked really sad!

Ziggy Update March 2021

Ziggy has had a pretty good moth healthwise and his skin seems to be getting better. For months after we brought him in he was still sensitive to touch and he is one of the few dogs we give Nexgard to regularly.

Perhaps when a dog has such a bad case of mange as Ziggy did, their immune system takes a while to recover and they are more susceptible to skin issues.

Until this month actually, Ziggy would flinch when we touched his side and back near his tail.

Now he seems so much better.
He still does not like to be picked up or washed and we haven't tried to leash train him yet. We will aim to do that this month.

Lily Update March 2021

Lily has not been too well this month as she has Erlichia which is a tick-borne disease that can be fatal if left untreated. We use anti-tick medication for all our dogs but it doesn't stop the ticks biting and transmitting, it just stops them holding on to the dog.

Signs that a dog has Erlichia are lethargy and loss of appetite and pale gums from Anaemia. We tested Lily's blood and she had really low platelets which is a sign of Erlichia.

Treatment is Doxycycline antibiotics for three weeks and also Immunol for boosting the immune system.  She has now completed her antibiotics and her last blood test was normal.  She has started to become more active again in the last couple of days so we believe she is fully recovered.  We have just started leash training too.  She's not the most enthusiastic student....

Blanca Update March 2021

We have been monitoring Blanca this month for signs of her cancer returning and until now she is ok.

She is still very unsociable and tends to run away when we try to go near her.

Rina and Rudylyn are working on trying to get near her by giving her treats but she is really slow to be socialised.

She has been at the shelter for two years already and despite having her in quarantine a number of times she is so resistant to socialisation, but we will not give up!

River Update March 2021

River's mange seems to have come back, so he's now on a regular schedule of baths, and has had another dose of Nexgard, which is a very effective way to treat mites and ticks that cause mange.  Hopefully we'll see his coat continue to grow.

He has been out on leash training with our volunteers, and loves being out on walks!
