Dog Update

Penny

Penny

On September 18 2021, we rescued a dog who had most likely been hit by a car, and been lying for a couple of days before a kind soul reported her, and stayed with her till we arrived as flies were already gathering.

She was so thin and covered with ants, flies and maggots. We put her on an
IV and gave her pain reliever, anti inflammatory medication, antibiotics and Ivermectin to kill any maggots left inside her wounds.

We noticed she had trouble breathing, so gave her medication to help clear the fluid in her lungs, most likely a result of a particularly severe case of Pneumonia.  In addition, she was Anemic, and had Heartworm, a parasitic infection.  Despite the extensive medication we were able to prescribe with the generous help of a couple from the US, the odds were simply stacked too high against her, and she stopped breathing around 2pm on Wednesday 22 September 2021, surrounded by the Sanctuary staff who had been sitting with her, stroking and talking to her as she slipped away painlessly.

It's utterly heartbreaking to witness dogs like Penny suffering and not be able to save them.
We are so, so sorry Penny.

Floyd

Floyd

On August 5 2021, we rescued four very young puppies from a mother who a had not been able to feed them as she had a facial injury and couldn't eat. She had no milk to offer her young puppies and was difficult to catch.

With the offer of a foster if the puppies were rescued, we took them in. Two of the puppies were very weak, and sadly little Fiona passed away the next day. Flynn and Frodo passed away after a couple of weeks - when the mother has no milk, often the puppies struggle even though they have been rescued.  We put them on IV as soon as they start to get weak.  We thought Floyd had a real chance, but he contracted Parvovirus, and faded very quickly, passing away on Wednesday 22 September 2022.

Ariel

Ariel

Christine found Ariel on 18 August 2021 abandoned in Bacong Cemetery.  She had a lump on her side, and was very weak.

That week, the Sanctuary took in 9 puppies in all, and not long after, a very sick dog called Arwen.

We believe poor Arwen bought Distemper into the Sanctuary once again, as we lost Josie to the virus last week.  Little Ariel must have been exposed, and she fought hard for some days before passing away in the night of Friday 17 September 2021.

Ariel

We are so sorry that this little life was cut short, but we gave her a chance at living, when others had simply abandoned her to die.  You can learn more about Distemper here.

Josie

Josie

Josie was a stray being fed by one of our vet assistants, Rudylyn.  She had a broken leg, and we put it in a cast to hopefully allow it to heal.  She was just starting to get mobile again when the second Distemper outbreak we've had to bear this year came in September.

On Saturday late afternoon, Ozzy was looking quite sick and started to get green discharge in his eyes. This is often due to dust but sometimes it is due to Distemper.   We tested him and he was positive for distemper.

Josie had also been looking unwell so we tested her - she was positive also, deteriorated rapidly, and died early morning 13 September 2021.   Her immune system must have been very weak for the distemper to kill her so quickly.  We are so sorry that just when things were looking up for her, a cruel virus robbed her of a chance of returning to health.

Levi Adopted!

Levi Adopted!

Laurence and his nephew Angelo visited the Sanctuary this morning, and are now proud fur parents of Levi!

You may remember Levi had a broken hing leg, so spent his first month with us with a cast.  It's lucky he is a young dog, with a bigger capacity for mending broken bones like this than a fully adult dog.

He had just begun to walk on a leash when he was adopted, so we hope he is looking forward to a lifetime of walkies with Laurence and Angelo!  You can find out more about Levi on his profile page here.

Finding a permanent, loving home is the ultimate goal for our rescues at DAS.  If you think you could provide a home for life, without cages and chains, for one of our rescues, then please look for more information here.
