Dawn

Dawn

Dawn

Approximate age:

5 years
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

January 2021

Where from:

Dumped by the roadside

Story:

On 27 April 2021, someone dumped a mother dog and 6 puppies not far from the Sanctuary. One puppy was squashed by a car and the mother disappeared so we just couldn't leave them.  Two of her siblings were quickly adopted but Dawn and her other two brothers had a tough start and contracted distemper.  Sadly her two brothers passed away.

Dawn was adopted shortly after her recovery and all seemed to be well at first.  Unfortunately after a couple of check ups, it became apparent that the adoption was not working out through no fault of Dawn's and so we brought her back to the sanctuary.   It's hard to get older puppies adopted so Dawn has remained with us since then and is the most delightful, friendly, little girl who just loves to have attention from her hoomans.

Maggy

Maggy

Approximate age:

4 years
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

January 2025

Where from:

Hit and run on the diversion road

Story:

Maggie was reported after a hit & run on the Diversion Road, a wide, new fast road with no lighting and lots of stray dogs.  She had a fracture in one leg and was unable to use the other. Initially, Maggy's broken leg was cast but it didn't heal.  Whilst undergoing treatment for her injuries it was also detected that Maggy was suffering from TVT (a type of canine cancer) which thankfully is treatable.

Once Maggy's TVT was treated it became clear that she would not recover the use of her back limbs and so she underwent a double amputation to allow her to move around more freely.  Although fully recovered, dogs like Maggy need extra special care as they have limited mobility and special needs so, although we hope for a forever home this furry little beauty it is more likely that she will be with us for a while.

Onyx

Approximate age:

1 and a half years
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

July 2024

Where from:

Mother Odette and siblings were dumped near the shelter

Story:

Onyx and his mother Odette and 3 siblings were brought to DAS by their owner who planned to surrender them.  Sadly, the sanctuary was unable to take any more rescues and anyway, DAS can not accept owner surrenders otherwise we would be inundated. So the owners just went behind the sanctuary and tied Odette to a tree were she and her puppies were later found by staff.

Onyx's siblings were both adopted but he has remained at the sanctuary with his Mum.  He is the liveliest of young dogs and loves nothing better than to tussle with his playmates all day, except if his hoomans are around when he just loves to play with them too!

Wilma

Wilma

Wilma

Approximate age:

1.5 years
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

March 2024

Where from:

Rescued from abuse

Story:

Wilma and another puppy together with two older dogs were reported by someone who had witnessed an on-going incidence of horrific animal abuse. DAS moved quickly but unfortunately not before one of Wilma's siblings was killed. All the dogs were brought to the sanctuary but as is so often the case it was impossible to get any prosecution without witnesses willing to make public statements.

The most important thing was that Wilma and the dogs with her were safe. Wilma is now integrating into the sanctuary very well, she can be a little be wary still which is totally understandable given the trauma she has been through. She is developing into a real sweetie who just loves to run freely outside during the exercise times.

Wren

Wren

Wren

Approximate age:

1 year
Date arrived at Sanctuary:

November 2024

Where from:

Dumped by the roadside

Story:

One of 4 pups dumped tied in a sack, Wren and her siblings (Wally, Wave and Whit) were lucky to be found by a member of staff passing by. Wally the only male in the litter was quickly adopted but the three girls have remained with us. They are all a delight and have their own little personalities.

Wren is a little angel and just likes to be part of anything that is going on when the young dogs play and have rough and tumble but she keeps her distance a little bit getting closer as as her confidence starts to grow,
