Wyn – Adopt a Stray

Wyn

Wyn

Wyn

On 22 March 2024, under our "Adopt a Stray" programme, we took in a soft-eyed young boy with an infected wound on his neck caused by a temporary leash of some kind.  It's anyone's guess why he had this tied so tightly around him.  We called him Wyn.

He was part of a pack being fed comfortably in the community, so when he is well enough, he will return to the pack he knows and grew up with.

Finding adopters for all our dogs is a never-ending task, so when a rescued dog without an owner comes from a community that looks out for their strays, often the kindest thing is to return them rather than keep them indefinitely.

Sadly, this story doesn't have a happy ending.  On 23 April 2024 we lost Wyn to Distemper. He was the first dog to show symptoms and we believe the one carrying the virus when we rescued him.
We do test all rescues for Distemper but it can incubate in a dog's system for up to a month. Wyn had already done his 14 days quarantine and was 2 weeks in the general population when symptoms began to show.
After his shots of Can glob-d he seemed to really improve but he suddenly started having trouble breathing and died from respiratory failure.
It's such an unpredictable disease.
We have given all vulnerable dogs antibodies and all other meds needed to help boost their immune systems. Two further puppies, Bett and Bram, also succumbed.
We are so sorry we couldn't save you Wyn.  Run free.

Chipmunk RIP

Chipmunk RIP

Chipmunk was found on 8 April 2024 abandoned on the side of a busy road.  He must have been only a matter of a week or two old.

We worked hard to provide him with a fighting chance, but puppies taken from their mother at this age, with no support, have very little chance of building their strength and immunity to infections and diseases without their mother's milk.

We did our best, but little Chipmunk barely put on any weight, and passed away on 21 April 2024.

We are so sorry we couldn't do more for him, but they were just too young to be abandoned like that.

Alexa RIP

Alexa RIP

Poor Alexa was in a very bad state when we took her in on 6 April 2024.  She was in late stage Ehrlichiosis when we rescued her just a couple of days ago. Ehrlichia if not treated can be fatal, causing internal haemorrhaging, respiratory problems and a range of neurological issues.  She was also full of worms and was very sick when we brought her in.
Here she is the day we rescued her - on a comfortable fluffy bed.  We gave her a funeral and said our goodbyes and told her we hoped she felt love, at least for a couple of days.
Run Free Alexa.

Clive

Clive

Clive didn't make it. He passed away at 11:59pm on Wednesday 27 March 2024. Our night staff tried to revive him but couldn't. He wasn't alone.  We are devastated.
When he started eating a few days ago we thought he had turned a corner but I guess he just didn't have the strength to keep fighting.

Someone out there - perhaps reading this - was once his owner, mutilated his ears and dumped him on the street when he was sick and left him to die.
At least Clive felt genuine love and care for the 5 weeks we had him.
You really were loved by us Clive. We hope you felt that. Run free sweet boy.

Alice

Alice

It is with great sadness that we tell you that Alice passed away on 21 March 2024.
For the last two years, Alice suffered from congestive heart failure. Recently, fluid started building up in her abdomen. By draining it regularly she was still able to enjoy her life.

Alice

Alice arrives at the Sanctuary

Just before her heart gave out, she was running around happily after a recent draining.
Sweet Alice, we miss you so very much. Know that we will take good care of your bestie Edith. Please say hello to Max, Shaun, and all the others we’ve lost when you see them on the rainbow bridge. 🌈 Run free baby girl.
