Fundraiser for Jake buys him the surgery he needs

An appeal for funds to cover Jake's surgery for bladder stones reached its target of P25,000 (around $500) in just a couple of days!

Jake

We rescued Jake back in January this year - you can read all about it on his profile page HERE.

A few days ago, we noticed he was having difficulty weeing so Doc Pierre suspected a UTI or Kidney stones.  Yesterday he had blood dripping from his penis so we took him straight to Animal Wellness for ultrasound and urinary analysis.  He has a lot of small stones in his bladder and if we don't remove them via surgery asap, he could be in a lot of trouble.

Doc Gama listened to his heart at the same time and he was totally relaxed, he is such a star.  Even when we put the catheter in and pumped up his bladder for the ultrasound, he didn't even flinch.

Jake before bladder surgery

We are going to do the surgery at Animal Wellness with Doc Gama as because of his age and the complexity of the surgery, we need special equipment that we don't have at the Sanctuary.

We want to give him the best chance of survival and recover. Surgery on an old dog is always risky, but we feel he is worth it.

Thanks to everyone who donated!

Richie

Richie

We found Richie abandoned in Bacong Cemetery along with his brothers Reggie and Roddy on 11 April 2021.  After only a couple of fun-filled weeks, he was adopted together with his brother Roddy, and looked set to spend the rest of a happy life being cared for (see here for that story).  He was a happy soul and full of life.

Richie

Unfortunately, by 29 April, Richie was showing signs of the Canine Distemper outbreak this area experienced in May / June 2021 .  Young pups and sick older dogs are less able to fight off Distemper (find out more here), and it is likely Richie and his brothers were already infected when they were rescued.  It is not possible to test for Distemper until symptoms appear, which can take up to six weeks.  Poor Richie just coundn't quite fight off the virus, and he passed away at the Sanctuary on 8 May 2021.   Richie's adopters were distraught, but eventually found it within themselves to provide a home for another puppy, Pumpkin.  We are so sorry we couldn't do much for young Richie, but are heartened by the thought that he knew happiness, warmth and cuddles in his short life.

Max gets treatment for boils

Max has been getting multiple boils over the last couple of months. We have tried him on numerous antibiotics and also tested him for Cancer - thankfully he was negative. Ideally, we would do a culture of the boil to identify what bacteria is causing the problem but there is nowhere to do that here in Dumaguete. The boils are very painful for him.
We are limited with medications for Max as he has kidney disease so we need to be careful we don't overtax his kidneys

Elsa gets treatment for boils

Elsa has been getting boils, along with Max. It's not clear what they are caused by, or where they come from, but she seems to recover more rapidly than Max.  As a precaution, we are getting Elsa's blood checked to see if there is something we can do to prevent them occuring.

Judy Goes for A Walk!

Judy is doing really well. She is really enjoying her walks with the volunteers and is really good on a leash now. She's getting a little fat we think! She is quite happy here and enjoys playing a lot. She has not been sick or had any injuries. Here is a video taken last Thursday of her on her walks.
