Rose

Rose

Little Rose fell victim to the Parvovirus (aka Parvo) on 10 September 2021. She was found abandoned in the road near the Sanctuary, something that is becoming increasingly commonplace sadly.  She was perhaps 6 weeks old. Parvo is not airborne and doesn't cause much of a problem to older vaccinated dogs but it is really dangerous to young puppies.

It affects the digestive system and some of the first signs are loss of appetite, vomiting and poop in the blood.  It can kill very quickly - often 3 days after the first signs. There is no cure as it is a virus, all you can do is support the immune system and keep the puppy hydrated.  Along with sister Tulip, she was on an IV overnight on 9 September, but had passed in her sleep.  So sorry we couldn't keep you safe Tulip.

Pedro Adopted!

Pedro Adopted!

Some happy news after so much sadness.  Pedro, a young dog illegally dumped outside the Sanctuary this week, was adopted on the spot by Melanie Macias and family.  He was in and out so quick, we barely got time to photograph him!  We're so glad he's found a permanent loving home, but there are many more waiting for their moment of happiness - not every dog is as lucky as Pedro.  Visit our website at dumagueteanimalsanctuary.com/our-rescues/our-dogs to read their stories.

Darcy makes it through the night

Darcy makes it through the night

Darcy recovering

Darcy has survived for 24 hours after rescue. This is a good sign as it means she likely doesn't have internal bleeding.
She is still on iv but ate food tonight which is a really good sign.  We had blood tests done which showed she had inflammation, expected after the impact of the motorcycle that hit her and also spending 10 hours shivering in a canal.

There is no cure as it is a virus, all you can do is support the immune system and keep the puppy hydrated.  We were putting her on IV when she stopped breathing. Doc Milton tried to resuscitate her and we put her on oxygen, but she sadly didn't make it.
