Honey adopted!

Honey Adopted!

Honey

Honey

Despite our current financial challenges, lots of good things are happening. We've had a number of adult adoptions over the last couple of weeks.
The latest is Honey!! Olga, Noel and Abby decided they had room for another senior and took Honey into their lovely home.
She has joined Elsie, Lola, Nana and Teo at what we are now calling, the DAS retirement home!

Honey when rescued

Honey when rescued

Honey was a stray and was reported with a huge tumor on the side of her head, she also had tumors on her abdomen.  It was strongly suggested that we put her to sleep but if there is any hope of quality of life, we never give up. We were so grateful that Doc Gama of Animal Wellness believed she could survive and thrive so we did surgery to remove the tumor. Unfortunately she lost one of her ears.
Very soon after the surgery she started bleeding from her uterus due to tumors and had to undergo emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. But she made it and is now cancer free!
She is such a survivor and will now live out her days with a family that loves her dearly - not that we didn't love her dearly - we were so sad to see her go but the Sanctuary is now getting over-crowded so we know she will be happier - she has settled in already.

We can only make dreams like this come true with your continued support - thank you for what you do for our rescues.
You can find out more about Honey on her profile page here..

Star adopted!

Star Adopted!

Star

Every time we post about one of our dogs, we hope someone out there will fall in love with them - and adopt them. Sadly, that doesn't always happen, but this time we hit the jackpot! The same couple who had also adopted Grady and Sterling from us, reached out to say they wanted to give Star a home! We posted about Sterling's adoption last week, please scroll back on our profile for the video. It's very rare for adult dogs to get adopted, let alone for someone to adopt 3 adult dogs! We could not be more grateful to have people like these in our community, but as we keep saying, we need more of them. Star took a little time to warm up to her new family - not strange considering she had spent years at the shelter

As you can see in the video, she was very fond of Rudylyn (who isn't?), and must have been quite confused about his new surroundings. But she's settling in, and we have no doubt that with a lot of love and patience, she'll be as affectionate in her new home as she was with us. Thank you Haldren and Margie for giving Star, Sterling, and Grady a home. We hope more people will follow their example. We currently have around 200 dogs at the Sanctuary, and we need to get them adopted if we want to continue rescuing those who desperately need our help. Please reach out to us if you're willing to give one our rescues a second chance and make space in our Sanctuary for another dog suffering on the street.

Tesha

Tesha

When we rescued Elsie, we had no idea that she was pregnant as she was so very thin. Then she shocked us all by suddenly going into labour. Only one puppy survived: Tesha.

Sadly Elsie had no milk to feed her puppy and was in no state to care for her as she recovered from a surgery. That’s why we kept Tesha in an incubator at the shelter.
She did really well for such a long time, eating a lot and putting on weight. But as she never got the essential colostrum from her mothers milk that builds up immunity, we knew she would be vulnerable to disease.
Even so, we were starting to get hopeful that maybe Tesha would pull through. So when she suddenly stopped eating and became lethargic, we were sick with worry. We tested her for a range of diseases and she tested positive for Giardiasis. It’s common at shelters and most dogs don’t suffer greatly. But in old dogs and puppies it can be fatal.
We did everything in our power to help Tesha survive, but sadly she died the following day.
We’re devastated that we couldn’t save little Tesha. We had been caring for her for more than a month, handfeeding her every few hours, so to lose her at this stage really hits hard.
Run free sweet Tesha. You were so very loved in your short time on Earth.

Sterling adopted!

Sterling Adopted!

Sterling

Sterling

We rescued Sterling from being euthanized at the city pound in December 2022. The pound collects reported strays and keeps them for 3 days, waiting for any owner to claim them. When they are not (and most are not), they put them to sleep.

Sterling

Sterling

Sterling was in a horrible state; practically hairless and at death’s door. But he made a fantastic transformation in a very short time! He became a handsome and confident boy, and got along well with the other dogs at the shelter.

Adult dogs rarely get adopted, but last week we received the best news ever. A wonderful couple - who had also adopted Grady from us - decided to give Sterling and Star a home!
We could not have asked for a better home for him. He’ll have space to run around, plenty of friends to play with (all rescues!), and of course his very own humans who will love him unconditionally.
We’re so grateful to have people like these in our community, but the truth is we need more of them. We currently have around 200 dogs at the Sanctuary, and we need to get them adopted if we want to continue rescuing those who desperately need our help.
If you’re willing to support our cause by giving one of our dogs a home, please message us.

Teo adopted!

Teo Adopted!

Teo adopted

Teo adopted

We have some more good news to share!  Teo, wo is older even than Max we think, was being fed by the wonderful people at Blair's Proper Food Store Blair and Steph. He then disappeared for 2 months and came back with a hole in his head.

Teo being treated

Teo being treated

We took him in, treated him, neutered him, vaccinated him and to our utter delight Olga offered to adopt him. Olga and Noel's house is turning into a dog retirement home!!
Initially he was very aloof as he had really attached to Rudylyn our head vet tech. Much as we really do want to keep them all, we need to make room for other dogs. But Olga and her family worked their charm and now Teo has fallen in love with Daniel and has become his person! You can read more about Teo's life since rescue on his profile page here.
