Tinkerbelle

On the afternoon of 19 October 2021, we got reports of a Husky that had been hacked on its spine and beaten over the head with something. She was in an extremely distressed, critical condition, but amazingly has not lost her trust of humans. She is a gentle dog with a big heart, and will now have a chance to be with a family who deserve her.

Tinkerbelle's Story

All pure-breed dogs here have owners, but even despite the horrific attack she suffered, the owner refused to cover treatment costs and take any responsibility, and surrendered the dog to DAS.
Tinkerbelle is around 2 years old but only 9 kilos in weight, and was full of ticks and fleas.

Tinkerbelle's Injury

The blade that she was hacked with pierced her spinal cord but did not sever it, but only time will tell if she will recover, as we are still unsure of the damage. Her blood tests show anemia and infection, but luckily her organs are functioning and she tested negative for tick-borne parasites and heartworm.
Her eye is damaged from the beating she received.

She is responding well, eating, and trying to move around, but we need to keep her fairly immobile to allow her spinal wound to heal and grow strong again. We are not sure if the chop in her vertebrae will cause it to shatter, and potentially paralise her. Further tests showed she was infested with whipworm, which is difficult to get rid of. We have started daily therapy with Tinkerbelle and an aggressive deworming programme to get rid of her whipworm infestation.

This kind of horrific abuse and neglect is all too common here. There are animal welfare laws but they are rarely enforced. We are working on changing that with the help of law enforcement, local government and community groups.

The positive news is that the response from donors to assist with the P40,000+ medical costs was overwhelming, with many small donations adding up to a considerable sum. We are so grateful for every peso sent.
