GRADY

Grady

In May 2023, a lady came to the Sanctuary asking if we could take in her pet, as she was leaving the island and could not take him with her.  We refused, as we have no capacity to look after healthy dogs abandoned for no good reason by owners.  Despite this, Grady (we named him) was simply left in the road and the woman drove off.  Abandoning pets is illegal, and we will proscute.

Grady's Story

On 12 May 2023, a lady turned up at the Sanctuary asking if we would take her dog. Her reason was that she was leaving the island the next day and couldn't take him - we said no.
We were over-capacity, and we rescue homeless critically injured strays.
We do not have the funds or capacity to take in dogs from irresponsible, uncaring owners.  We would collapse as an organization if we did so.

Grady

The woman left and then clearly abandoned her dog just outside the Sanctuary. The poor boy probably thought he was going on an adventure with his family and had no clue he was about to be mercilessly dumped.  We have it on CCTV, and released the footage on social media on 21 May after giving her ample time to be responsible for his care - we will not release him back to her. The poor boy was confused and terrified but we brought him in. How could we leave him to fend for himself?
We usually don't pursue criminal cases as we just don't have the resources but for this situation we will. People need to understand there is a law against animal abandonment - up to 2 years in prison.

We get criticised a lot by some people because we don't say yes to every request to accommodate dogs.
We are the only Sanctuary in the whole province and we need to survive if we are to effect change here. We are really starting to make an impact but if we are not careful on how we manage the Sanctuary, we could go the same way as many other charities and cease to operate for lack of funds.

People who want to give up their dogs can advertise them for adoption on the pet adoption pages. We just cannot take responsibility for every dog here.  Grady was depressed, no wonder.  He barely ate and just lies in his kennel.  His first weeks with us were under quarantine, trying to protect him from the distemper outbreak, as we have no idea if the owner gave him his vaccinations.  We hope the previous owner does the honourable thing and contribute to his care with us until a suitable home can be found.  And in the meantime, we will not rest pursuing prosecution.
