Postcard from Shaun #7

Postcard #7 from Shaun on his Holidays

Dear Everyone

Had a relaxing afternoon in the resort spa. My fur is coming back after the mange infection and I want to be LOOKING MY BEST when I return to the Sanctuary soon! I was thinking of getting a pedicure too, but as I like digging in the sand, I decided just to go with the LORI Soap Hot Tub Treatment package. Very relaxing, although the resort staff can be a little rough with the towel round my sensitive bits. 4 stars, recommend.

Love to you all,
from Shaun x

Jonathan’s Tribe

Jonathan's Tribe

As well as great physical and mental exercise (for the walkers too!), taking dogs out on the lead outside the Sanctuary gets our rescues better prepared for that new life when they get adopted. Some dogs don't need leads, and walk with us wherever we go. This is Jonathan's tribe - every Wednesday he completes 5 or 6 walks in the company of TinTin, Phoenix and Bella. They bound ahead and clear the way while Jonathan and the lead-bound dog follow on behind. It's just possible that they are the best exercised dogs in the Province, as they are there on EVERY walk!

Here are some of today's walked dogs out having fun in the woods behind the Sanctuary.   If you are local, and can COMMIT to a regular time slot each week for months on end, then get in touch with us to see about becoming a DAS Volunteer.

Dirk

Dirk

One of five puppies dumped in a road in a bag (one escaped only to be killed by a vehicle), Dirk was the smallest of the litter.  He arrived on 27 April 2021, and after a promising start, he, along with siblings Dean and Dottie contracted Distemper in the outbreak of May-July 2021.

Sadly, Dottie passed on 19 May, but it looked like Dirk had managed to weather the worst of the virus.

However, despite testing negative for Distemper in late June, he never got back to his previous state of health. A couple of days later he started having breathing issues and his temperature dropped to 32 degrees which is dangerously low. We managed to stabilise him and had him on oxygen but he stopped breathing on the afternoon of 7 July 2021.

We believe it was pneumonia which in his weakened state he couldn't fight off. This is so terribly sad, but we are privileged to have been able to spend even this short time loving you.  Go find your sister Dottie and give her a big hug from us.

You can find out more about Distemper here.

Postcard from Shaun #6

Postcard #6 from Shaun on his Holidays

Dear Friends,

What a strange day I've had! The Resort Staff have been concerned about me not pooping since I got here, and so gave me "a helping hand". Why is everyone so obsessed with MY BUTT?! Anyway, I did poop, and I've never seen a reaction like it from the Staff. Auntie Christine paid me a visit, and she was beside herself! I'm looking forward to seeing what they do when I pee my bed hahahaha! All the other beach dogs came to see Auntie Christine, so did my guard-dog duty and barked them away - you can't be too careful with these locals!

See you all soon,

Love, Shaun x x

Weka and Possum Adopted!

Weka and Possum Adopted!

Yet another "Foster Fail"!  After their sister Kiwi was fostered then adopted last week, the same thing just happened with Possum and Weka.  They were

dumped on the road and found on 19 June 2021, riddled with worms and very weak. With the Sanctuary at capacity, and the lingering impact of the Distemper outbreak, it was not possible for them to be kept at the Sanctuary. Mark and family took them in, then decided to make them a permanent home.

Thanks Mark and family for adopting this cute pair!  To find out more about Fostering at this difficult time where the Sanctuary is temporarily closed, please check out the Foster page or message us directly.
