NELLIE

Nellie

In May 2024, we took a number of dogs with similar but different conditions affecting their eyes. In Nellie's case, she was referred to us by the owners, but the maggot infestation was so severe it was clear she was the subject of gross neglect.  If we can heal her, she will not be going back there.

WARNING - NELLIE'S HEAD WOUNDS WERE SEVERE, SO PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR SOME DISTURBING IMAGES IF YOU SCROLL FURTHER.

Nellie's Story

On 22 May 2024, we took in an owner surrender.
This is a case of severe neglect and not being bothered to get help for a dog clearly in need. The owner messaged us asking if they could get treatment for their dog. After seeing the dog there was no way we were going to treat and allow the dog to go back so we told them to surrender her to us.

The dog's eye appeared to have been eaten by maggots, as has some of her face.  This is criminal neglect, but the Sanctuary simply does not have the resources at this time to prosecute.  Also, the cases of neglect here are quite numerous, so the priority is the immediate welfare of the dog.  If we prosecute every owner at fault, we will be tied up in court cases for a prolonged period of time, at great expense.

We called this poor baby Nellie. She will need long term treatment and surgery - which is always risky with Shih Tzus as they often have adverse reactions to anaesthesia.  After cleaning out her wound, and intensive treatment, after just a month it became apparent that the eye was undamaged; sometimes maggots eat away at diseased or dead flesh, and in Nellie's case, there was enough healthy tissue left to begin the rebuilding process.  We wish only the best for her and a full recovery.

Nellie Nellie was a dog with one of the worst-looking infections we’ve seen in our years of rescuing dogs.  She made a miraculous recovery, but we knew that her stage 4 kidney disease was too far gone to give her anything more than palliative care and relief.  She was starting to experience the pain that Click to see post….
