In early February 2023 we got a report of dog with a rope cut into his neck.  On removing it, we discovered a very large hole in his throat that needed surgery to close up.  Many people contributed funds, large and small, and he has made a remarkable recovery.  The hole is much smaller, and may even close over completely in time.

Philip's Story

On 1 February 2023, we picked up a young dog that had a rope tied round his neck.  It must have been tied when he was a puppy, and when he grew it tightened and began to cut him deeply. We knew the wound was deep, but it was hard to see the extent of the damage that had been done.
Despite the excruciating pain he must have been in, Philip patiently let our staff examine him. But in order to remove the rope, we had to sedate him.

He immediately started vomiting as a reaction to the anesthesia, which gave us hope that his aesophagus was still intact.
But soon after, he suddenly stopped breathing. Our staff immediately gave him rescue breaths, and to everyone’s relief he started breathing on his own again after a few minutes - but very weakly.

After removing the rope and cleaning the wound, we could clearly see a large hole in his throat. When he exhaled, we could feel air exiting through the wound.
We knew timing was of the essence, so we immediately brought him to the vet clinic.
The vet confirmed that the rope had cut all the way through his windpipe. Luckily this can be fixed with surgery, and it’s a procedure with a high success rate.

The surgery went well and the vet was able to close most of the hole, but there was a small part that remains open as the wound was so large. This has grown smaller over time, but is still there, meaning he has a huffy, quiet kind of bark!  He is a very happy boy, loves attention and is very friendly.
