Vito
We sadly had to put to sleep a dog we rescued after DAS Supporters Jon and Sue reported a hit and run in Valencia. They called us and stayed with him until we arrived. We called him Vito. We took him for x-rays at PetVet and were emotionally preparing to have to put him to sleep, but with a spinal dislocation our vets believed with intensive laser therapy and hydrotherapy, he had a good chance of healing.
Luckily, because of the generosity of you, our donors, we now have both these treatments at the Sanctuary.
He was an old dog, maybe around 9 or 10, and we are sure he had an owner as his teeth were in good condition, he's had good nutrition, indicated by a healthy red blood cell count, and no ticks, fleas or mange. Perhaps this is another dog who fled due to fear of fireworks at the New Year.
We tried for a week with laser therapy on his fractured spine but there was no improvement. We would have tried for longer but his organs started shutting down and despite our best efforts he was crying in pain, and we couldn't let him suffer.
Somewhere out there is someone who we're sure loved and cared for him. Somewhere out there is someone who ran him over and left him lying in agony on the side of the road.
Vito, may you run free, without pain.
Thank you to everyone who cared about him and sent in donations for his treatment.
We gave him a service to send him on his way with love. RIP Vito. You were loved and your life mattered.
