Pele's Story
We adopted Pele out 2 years ago, to what we thought was a good family. We screen adopters as best we can and follow up for a few months. Practically though we can't do much more as we are a small organisation with limited resources. We just hope that owners will show the same level of care that the exhibit in first few months.
This is a tragic story that is all too common. People want a cute little puppy, then as the dog gets older, they can't be bothered with giving a dog what it needs, and the poor dog is left to suffer.
On 6 May 2024 we got a message from someone who was a witness to the neglect of Pele. Apparently the adopters left the country and left Pele and another dog on a tiny balcony that was hit by the sun for hours. They were sending someone to feed and give water. The balcony was full of poop and urine. Neighbors complained and tried to get something done but nothing happened. This went on for a few months.
As soon as we heard we went straight there and insisted that we take both dogs. We weren't going to take Pele and leave the other, which we called Nemo. Initially there was resistance from the lady who was there, she doesn't actually live there but knows the family, but we refused to leave without them. It was a difficult rescue as the dogs were terrified and poor Pele was trying to protect the other dog. We finally got them both and took them to vet house.
Pele's wee was so dark from dehydration it looked like blood and they stank. There was no water of food left out for them. At least they are safe now. Pele was very aggressive initially but is starting to calm down. We called the other dog Nemo. He's the sweetest boy but very timid. Can anyone give them a second chance?
