GOLDIE

Goldie

In December 2024, we were alerted to an old dog struggling to breathe, lying in the street.  She was reported to have been dumped by an owner, but we later discovered it was simply a case of not being able to afford the veterinary fees.  This is a common fate for even well-loved dogs owned by families on restricted means.  We called her Goldie.

Goldie's Story

On 11 December 2024,we received initial reports of an abandoned dog, lying in the street, struggling to breathe. After we took her in, we discovered that she was a loved dog whose owners simply could not afford the veterinary bills for her conditions, and so called us.

This highlights the complexity of running a rescue organisation in a country where the average person can't afford human medical treatment let alone the high costs of vet treatment, largely caused by the costs of the medications.  When we get reports we do our best to help when we can but as we have no space in clinic, we sent the dog to Animal Wellness.
This is the tragedy that a lot of dog lovers face here. One night in a clinic, with initial tests is a month's salary.

Doc Gama reported that the Goldie was over 12 years old, was blind in both eyes, had fluid build up in her abdomen, and has hookworm. In addition, she tested positive for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma, and had a severe ear infection. She was not in a good way, and Doc Gama believed she may be in organ failure.

Under all her fur, she is actually thin. She looked well fed because of fluid build-up in her body.

She had an extremely enlarged heart which caused severe fluid build-up, not only in her abdomen (ascites) but also in her chest and ears - we drained a lot of fluid from her.

Vets suggested euthanasia as an option as her heart will never return to a normal size, but as she's never been given any medication for her condition, we wanted to try her on a combination of heart meds that have worked well with other dogs at the Sanctuary.  We just wanted to try, and if it doesn't work, and she's suffering, we will reassess.

We don't have enough space at the Sanctuary to give her the peace and quiet she needed, so we were delighted when Olga stepped up to foster her.
It's not easy for Olga, as Goldie has a number of meds to manage her condition.
Goldie has adapted well and is navigating her new home well, despite her vision limitations.
