STEWIE

Stewie

Stewie had been run over and the driver didn't stop to help.  He was rescued in December 2022, and after an amazing response to our requests for rescue funds, he had a successful amputation of his broken leg, and is now a happy three-legged boy!

Stewie's Story

We got a call on 3 December 2022 about a dog that was hit by a truck. His front leg is mangled and when we took him to Animal Wellness, x-rays showed he had a dislocated femur.  Doc Gama assessed him and believed he had a really good chance of recovery following surgery to put his femur back in the socket and perform an amputation to the mangled part of his leg.

With cases like this many people suggest euthanasia and of course we always consider it. We do actually euthanize when there is no hope of recovery, we just don't post about it as its a painful decision to make which we carry alone.  The amputation surgery was successful, but the femur wouldn't stay in place, so he had further surgery to remove the femoral head and let the muscles support the leg. This is what happened with two of our shelter dogs, Rosco and Daisy who as many people know are fully mobile now, in fact two of the most energetic hyper active dogs at the shelter.

The second surgery was successful, and he is now undergoing hydrotherapy to regain some of his mobility and help strengthen the joint.  Despite all this, he is a very happy soul, and we hope he has just as good a life as our other tripod dogs!
