BASIL

Basil

In July 2024, we got a number of reports of a poor dog dragging himself around along a busy highway.  With a few recent adoptions, we felt we could make space for the little guy.  We called him Basil.

Basil's Story

On 5 July 2024, we responded to numerous calls about a dog staggering around on a busy highway. Despite his condition he was managing to cover an area of a few kilometres. We went out to look for him and eventually found him taking shelter on someone's porch.
x-rays showed a healed spinal fracture and also a broken pelvis.

Given his determination to survive, and the fact that we have healed many pelvic fractures, we are giving him a chance.  We called him Basil.

We were able to detect on the x-rays that Basil's colon was full of bones and it's blocking his ability to poop. This is the painful reality of living on the streets struggling to survive, eating anything they can find that might keep them alive a little longer. We have had dogs who pooped out plastic bags.

We ended up amputating one of his back legs as the head of his femur had been pushed out of place and was pressing into his anal canal, making it difficult to poop. He also had a lot of bones in his intestines.
We found out that he was actually able to poop a little but he immediately ate it.   He vomited a lot of poop before we did the surgery.

His red blood cell count was still a little low but we used a medication called Epoetin which helped. His internal organs were in good condition and his
broken pelvis seemed to have healed well.  We gave him a lot of cage rest initially, and took him out every day for a short time to have a change of scenery.

He's recovered well from his amputation and has adapted well to having just three legs!  He's such a happy, gentle boy and we'd love to find him a caring home - he's such a deserving dog.
