Around two months ago, two tiny puppies were dumped outside our shelter. They were only about seven weeks old. One of them — Roo — had both of her eyes severely injured. We did everything we could to try and save them, but the damage was too extensive. She has now lost her sight completely and will need surgery in the coming months to remove her eyes to prevent ongoing infection. We don’t know exactly what happened to Roo, but the nature of her injuries strongly suggests this was not an accident. Despite everything, Roo is still here. She still eats, still responds to touch, still wants connection. Because she’s blind, she can’t safely move around with the other dogs, so she has to stay in a cage for now. We take her out as often as we can, but it’s not the life any puppy should have. This is the reality of what we see. We would love to find a home for her here in the Philippines, we can't send her overseas as the process is just to lengthy and expensive. Roo: Someone Took Her Eyes, But Not Her Will to Live
At DAS, we deal with severe wounds almost every single day. Many of the dogs we rescue arrive with deep infections, open injuries, and tissue damage that has often been left untreated for weeks. In this video, we show how we clean and treat these wounds using a simple but very effective method – medical-grade manuka honey. Manuka honey has natural antibacterial properties and helps promote healing while keeping the wound environment stable. It’s something we rely on regularly, especially in cases where access to advanced treatments is limited. You can also use triple antibiotic cream in place of Manuka - and even brown sugar! This video includes real footage from the shelter. Rina our shelter manager and Rudylyn our head vet assistant are treating our new rescue Kobe. Real Rescue Work: Cleaning and Healing Deep Wounds
Kane came to Dumaguete Animal Sanctuary in August 2022. He was skin and bone when we rescued him, with a badly mangled front leg that could not be saved. The leg had to be amputated, but despite everything he had been through, Kane adapted and still had good mobility. From the beginning he was always a bit of a loner. At the shelter he preferred to sit quietly just inside the front gate, watching the world go by and waiting patiently for his daily walk. He never bonded with the other dogs and didn’t want them anywhere near him. For a long time he kept his distance from the staff as well. It took almost a year before he began to trust us, and even now there are only a few people he really feels comfortable with. About four months ago things began to change. Kane slowly started losing the ability to walk. It began in his front leg and gradually progressed until he could no longer use his back legs either. We have run the tests that are available to us and everything has come back normal. Without advanced imaging like MRIs it is difficult to know exactly what is happening. But we have seen dogs come through our shelter before who seemed beyond hope. Hector, Cole and Thandi all arrived completely paralysed, and with time, care and intensive therapy they eventually regained full mobility. So we are not giving up on Kane. He may be a quiet dog who has always kept to himself, but he is still fighting — and we will keep fighting for him.
