Arthur

Arthur

It is with tremendous sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Arthur.
We rescued Arthur 2.5 years ago after he was ruthlessly hacked by someone. He was seen wandering around with a huge gash in his side.
People in the area who fed him said he once had an owner who died, and then Arthur was left to fend for himself.  You can read more about Arthur on his profile page here.

He must have been loved by his owner as he had the sweetest disposition. He wasn't too bothered about playing with other dogs, but he loved people.
He would have made a great companion had someone chosen him for adoption, but he was always overlooked.
At least he knew love at the Sanctuary.

Arthur

Arthur

His death was sudden and unexpected. Rudylyn was doing her daily dog health check and noticed Arthur wasn't getting up to greet her as he usually did, so she took him immediately to the vet for a check.
While on the table, he suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing. Despite numerous resuscitation attempts, we couldn't revive him.
It was very likely a cardiac arrest given his advanced age.
Thank you to his sponsors, Catherine and Krista, for all the love and support you gave him.
Run free, sweet Arthur, you were loved beyond measure.

Butch

Butch

Butch

Butch was dumped outside a staff member's house on 30 October 2024.  Like all very young dogs born in the stray world, the odds are stacked against them, but we hoped Butch would pull through.  Sadly, he passed without warning on 13 November 2024.

Martha

Martha

Martha

marth

Martha was reported lying in a box. She was in a bad way, pooping blood, which was likely due to internal bleeding.  A fecalysis showed that she was infested with worms and a skin scrape, showed she was riddled with sarcoptic mange. Blood tests showed that she was in starvation.  We brought her in at 10:50am Saturday, and she ate a little chicken. We put her on IV and other medication that she needed. At 4:30, she started struggling to breathe, and her heart stopped. We tried to resuscitate her with epinephrine, but she couldn't be revived.

Days like this can really deflate us, but at DAS, we are always hopeful and optimistic that the situation here is changing. And it is.
We are at capacity at this current shelter and temporarily limited in the amount of dogs and cats we can rescue. But because of our hard work, vision, and most importantly, very generous supporters, we will soon have a shelter 12 times the size of the current one and we will be able to do so much more.
Sadly, it was too late for Martha.
Run free, sweet girl.
And thanks again to everyone for your continued support. It's truly so much appreciated.

Esther

Esther

Esther

On 3 November 2024, we took in a senior dog, who collapsed on the street.  Her skin was severely inflamed, but we hoped we could save her.

Sadly, she didn't make it. She had a seizure the next day followed by a cardiac arrest. We tried to revive her but couldn't.

Right now all it seems we are able to offer these dogs is a comfortable, quiet passing, which I guess is at least something.  It seems like once they feel safe, and their stress response comes down, their body gives up.

Run free lovely girl.

Rafael

Rafael

On 3 November 2024, we were sent this video of some people here in the Philippines who really do care.
Rafael was seen stuck in a river by some boys who messaged us and tried to get him out.  Rabies is a serious threat here, and because most people are not vaccinated, people are understandably cautious.
Yet despite their fears, these boys went in and got Rafael out.
We picked him up immediately, did the full range of tests and found he was in acute kidney failure. He also had a lot of wounds over his body.
We put him on meds and painkillers and made him comfortable. He passed away peacefully 3 hours later.
Thank you, Reme, and friends for trying to save him.
Thank you to everyone here who really does care for animals, feeds strays, and does the best they can with what limited resources they have.
Run free Rafael.
