Coco-Chanel Rides Again!

Coco Rides Again!

Coco has scoliosis of the spine and her two back legs were paralysed but sticking out stiffly at awkward angles.
As a result she couldn't even shuffle around using her front legs. She was pretty much immobile.
Our only option was a double amputation to at least let her move around on her own.
We were planning to do a fundraiser for her surgery costs but in response to our plea for volunteer vets, one vet from outside the province volunteered for ten days. They did coco's amputation and spayed and neutered all our older puppies.  This saved us over 100,000 pesos in vet costs.  The vet who came wants to remain anonymous so we will of course respect their wishes.  But please know that we are so incredibly grateful for your sacrifice.
Coco is now pretty much recovered from her surgery and went in her wheelchair again for the first time since her amputation.
She is such a delightful little girl, so full of joy!!

We had 3 older puppy adoptions today!! This is amazing news as puppies rarely get adopted once they get past 4 months.
Arlo and Axel were adopted by Thelma and her family.
While Anka was adopted by Giovanni.

Elsie adopted!

Elsie Adopted!

Elsie when rescued

Elsie when rescued

When we first rescue a dog or cat, we have no idea what the future entails for them or the extent of the treatment they will need. We first ask the vet what the prognosis is and if he / she says there is a chance of recovery - we go all in to save them.
However, donations tend to dry up for specific rescues after the first initial posts, and then we are left to find ways to make sure they get the best treatment - often having to use money set aside for basic running costs and hope that more money will come in from somewhere so we can pay the bills.
When we rescued Elsie on 15 June 2023, we had no idea that she had multiple tumors or indeed that she was even pregnant. She was so thin.
She first underwent surgery for her mammary tumors, with the plan that she would have surgery a few weeks later to remove the other tumor and also to spay her. She hated being in a cage, so we would not be able to transport her safely and comfortably to Manila where a kind adopter had stepped up to accept her. Luckily, our own super-adopter Olga stepped in and agreed to give her a home.

But on 28 June, she unexpectedly went into labour. She was in no condition to give birth as she still had staples in from her first surgery.
We rushed her to Animal Wellness and did an emergency c-section. The poor girl was opened up again just 10 days after her last surgery.
While under anaesthesia, Doc Amy decided to remove the remaining tumor and spay her as well. It was a complex surgery and only one puppy survived.
This surgery and her aftercare cost 71,000 pesos (1300 USD) , but she will not need any further surgeries so she can start her new life.
She is so resilient, and such a happy sweet dog - Its incredible how she has coped with all of this given her age, which based on the fact she has no teeth, is around 10 years old.
Sadly she had no milk to feed her puppy and is no state to care for her as she recovers from her surgery. The puppy - we named her Tesha - is in an incubator at the shelter being hand reared.
Poor Elsie has been through so much but she will now get to enjoy a life of love, care and comfort in her remaining years.
