In July 2023, we found an older dog with a broken foreleg.  We were hoping to heal it, and release her, but the leg was too badly broken.  We had no choice but to amputate.  We called her Nila.

Nila's Story

On 21 July 2023, we noticed an older dog hobbling along the street in great distress.  Her front left leg had been badly broken, most likely in a hit-and-run accident.

We have had some success healing fractures in the past, and given the over capacity of the Sanctuary, once healed, Nila could be a candidate for release back into the community.  Healthy, sterilised animals who are otherwise in good condition are clearly living a satisfactory life on the streets.

Sadly, this was not to be the case for her. The fractures were compound, and we decided that amputation for her would be the best chance at a happy, mobile life.  The surgery was successful, and she's now sterilised and on the way to recovery.  Many of our "tripods" are see little drop in mobility for not having the full complement of limbs, and live happy lives with adopted families or in the Sanctuary - see Jack, Davey and Kane as examples of happy, healthy animals.
