ALF

Alf

In September 2023, one of our staff found a dog lying in the street unable to move.  We called him Alf and took him in, as a suspected hit-and-run victim.  It turned out he had no broken bones but a cancerous growth than may respond to chemo.  We want to give him a chance.

Alf's Story

On 16 September 2023, one of our staff came across this poor boy lying in the middle of the road. We thought it likely he was hit by a car, and again, left to face his fate alone, as his hind leg was severely swollen.
Despite being so over capacity, and in the middle of a funding crisis, we couldn't leave him to die in the sun.

We immediately took him to the Sanctuary and ran blood tests. His vital organs seemed ok though he had an infection. We couldn't do x-rays until the swelling went down so we put him on medication and observed him over the weekend.

The x-rays eventually showed the swelling was an osteosarcoma (bone cancer) that has metastasized to his lungs.  We faced a difficult decision as vets said he was a candidate for euthanasia. However, Honey also had tumors in her lungs which cleared with a chemo called Doxyrubocin.

We decided we want to give Alf every chance to recover. He is currently showing no signs of pain or difficulty breathing and is active and responsive.
We will do 3 sessions of chemo and then x-rays again. If there is no shrinkage of the tumors we will reassess. Let's hope his tumors respond.
